Bishop Augustus Short obtained a grant and purchased an acre of land in early 1848. The foundation stone was laid on Ascension Day, 1848 by Bishop Short and the Governor, Colonel Robe. On 20 December 1849, the church was consecrated by Bishop Short and opened for public worship. It was used as the pro-Cathedral until St Peter's Cathedral opened in 1877.

The aesthetic beauty, sense of history, serenity and acoustics of Christ Church North Adelaide make it a favourite venue for weddings and community events.
